Dr. David Thode
Hi, I’m Dr. David Thode! As soon as I open my mouth, you’ll know I’m not from around here - I’m an Australian that has swapped the heat for the winters.
I attended Sydney University in my hometown, first studying psychology and then completing my degree in dentistry. After practicing in one of the hottest places in the world (Mount Isa, Australia), I decided I should take on the other end of the spectrum and challenge the coldest of winters: Winnipeg, Manitoba. Three long years later, I realized the coast was calling me home, so I moved to Victoria and opened Cook Street Village Dental. I love dentistry and Victoria, so being able to do what you love, in a place you love, is a dream come true.
To Cook Street Village Dental, I'm excited to bring my favourite aspect of dentistry: working with patients to find a solution that works best for them. There are always multiple ways to tackle any problem; however, finding the answers that work for a patient’s current situation and future desires is what I find most rewarding about dentistry. Whether it’s missing teeth, which can make enjoying food a challenge, or not having the confidence to smile at social events, I like working with patients to find a solution that will make them smile, and determining how we'll work together to achieve that solution. Taking advanced continuing education through groups like the Kois Institute and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry has allowed me to expand my available treatment options to help patients. I help my patients manage every type of dental challenge including aesthetics, function, and anxiety that prevents comprehensive care. Getting to know great patients is the highlight of my day, and I look forward to getting to know the new faces who walk through the doors at Cook Street Village Dental.
From the moment I first visited Victoria on a vacation in 2015, Cook Street Village had an impact on me. The beautiful mature trees, all the friendly people walking around enjoying life, the stunning homes, the views from Dallas Road- I could wax lyrical about Cook Street Village for hours. Although all those features were great, what really drew me to the area was the sense of community. In the middle of a growing city there was an oasis where people seemed to chat with one another, had pride in where they lived, and supported one another: this sense of community is important to me, and we can’t wait to have Cook Street Village Dental as a member of the Cook Street Village family.
Away from dentistry, I’m a sports fanatic; football, rugby, and waterpolo are my usual vices, however, I’ve lived in Canada long enough to develop an enjoyment of hockey. Under threat from the in-laws, I’ve been told I’m a Calgary Flames fan, which has been a bit of a roller coaster of late. I enjoy lifting weights and cooking; sous vide style cooking is my favourite at the moment, although I do feel very much at home behind a grill. I've found the patients of British Columbia to be very welcoming, always keen to share tips on where to find amazing outdoor adventures on this beautiful island, the great restaurant scene, or any of the sensational hiking routes on our doorstep. I look forward to continuing to explore and enjoy the area alongside the Cook Street Village community!
